The songs that we listen to serve as both delightful soundtracks for our feelings and aural archives of history. Music constantly offers a first-hand account of the places and people it springs forth from, whether it be by repeatedly telling you with the exploits of a person, the circumstance of a place, or by relishing in the glow of an event – imaginary or otherwise.
No other type of music in Nigeria has the same tangible link to its context and roots as street music. These experiences urge to be felt, whether it is via the simple exuberance of its supporters or the distinctive rhythm adopted by these artists.
By combining the older works of artists like DaGrin, Lord of Ajasa, Olamide, and Reminisce, you can create a thread of the concerns, doubts, hopes, joys, and perspectives that drove them and, unintentionally, draw from their own narratives to gain insight into the mindset of the people from their places of origin.
Listeners can immediately translate to the othering of indigenous Hip-Hop during the majority of the 2000s when DaGrin rapped, “Aimoye many times ta wan eyan ti pe kin lo give up, pe mo local, pe ona mi on se hip-hop,” on the song “Ghetto Dream” off his classic album, “C.E.O.”
Music lovers can see a shift in the balance for indigenous music when Olamide vehemently declared himself the voice of the streets, firmly filling the leadership void left by DaGrin’s terrible passing.
